My Fake Death Was The Punchline To His Cruel Joke Chapter 14

Three days after the restraining order was issued, Bennett’s lawyer contacted Leo.

The email was brief.

“Mr. Shaw attempted suicide last night. He is demanding to see Mara in person. If his request is denied, he will go to the media with the details of her ‘faked death’ and the private nature of your three-year relationship.”

An attached photo showed Bennett in a hospital bed, his wrist wrapped in thick bandages. His face was ashen, but his eyes were fixed on the camera with a familiar, chilling intensity.

He knew exactly what I was afraid of.

Three years ago, he had turned my humiliation into entertainment. On our wedding day, he’d promised me forever and then locked our marriage license in a drawer.

Now, he was threatening to burn down my new life just to force me back under his control.

I closed the laptop.

“Tell him to go public if he wants to.”

Leo looked at me, then typed a reply in his iciest lawyer-speak:

“You are welcome to contact the media. The prosecution will surely appreciate your voluntary contribution of additional evidence in the case against Ms. Mercer.”

There was no response.

But the day before the hearing, Camille’s team made their move.

They filed an emergency motion to have all of my testimony thrown out.

In a forty-seven-page document, they painted me as a manipulative fraud who had faked her own death and was now using the legal system for revenge.
