My Fake Death Was The Punchline To His Cruel Joke Chapter 18

Camille was sentenced to prison for intentional assault.

Bennett’s cooperation earned him a reduced sentence, but he still faced charges for conspiracy, reckless endangerment, and a host of other crimes.

The moment I stepped out of the courthouse, I was swarmed by reporters.

“Ms. Ortiz, Bennett Shaw testified for you, even destroying himself and his social circle in the process. Can you forgive him?”

“Is there any chance for the two of you?”

Camera flashes strobed around me.

I stopped and looked directly into the lenses.

“We once had a very complicated relationship.”

I paused, letting the silence hang.

“But that chapter of my life is over.”

The reporters pressed forward, but a commotion behind us drew their attention.

Bennett, being led down a separate corridor, had heard my answer. He tore free from the deputies and lunged toward me.

Leo immediately stepped in front of me.

But Bennett wasn’t trying to get to me.

He only made it a few feet before the deputies tackled him, slamming him face-first onto the marble floor. His head hit the cold stone with a sickening crack, and the handcuffs dug into the fresh scars on his wrists.

Blood started to seep through his bandages.

He didn’t seem to feel the pain. He just strained to lift his head, his eyes finding mine through the forest of legs.

“It wasn’t Mara who ruined me!”

He shouted it to the entire courthouse, to the reporters, to every rolling camera.

“I ruined her love! I turned her into a bet! I treated her forgiveness like an endless line of credit!”

The chaotic hallway fell silent.

I didn’t look back.
