My Family Regret When They Lose Me Chapter 03

Fighting back the nausea, I went to the study and packed my documents and everything else I needed.

By the time I came out, they seemed to be done.

Marco was carrying Sofia toward the bathroom when he looked up and saw me.

His arms went slack, and Sofia nearly fell to the floor.

“Darling, it’s not what you think—”

I looked at him, feeling nothing but disgust.

Even now, he was still lying.

“Don’t call me that.”

“Marco, we’re getting a divorce. My lawyer will be in touch.”

He froze for a second before his face darkened. He grabbed my wrist.

“Beatrice, you won’t even listen to an explanation, and you’re threatening me with divorce?”

“Who else is going to want you?”

“Who could put up with that temper of yours? You always have to have everything your way. No wonder even your parents don’t love you.”

I slapped him across the face.

“Let go.”

His head jerked to the side. In the next instant, he slapped me back.

A sharp ringing exploded in my ear.

My face swelled almost immediately, the corner of my mouth splitting open.

He seemed to realize what he’d done only after the fact. He looked down at his hand, then at me.

Sofia, now on the floor, clutched at my pant leg, crying.

“I’m sorry, Beatrice. This is all my fault. I seduced him. I’ll do anything—just please, don’t blame Marco—”

I looked down at her.

“You want me to forgive you?”

“Then go die.”

Sofia’s whole body trembled.

Slowly, she stood, tears streaming down her face.

“Fine. I’ll go. I’ll never appear in front of you again.”

She ran out, sobbing.

Marco shot me a look I had never seen before.

“I can’t stand this side of you.”

“Honestly, being with your sister is a hell of a lot better than being with you.”

Then he ran after her.

Soon I could hear Sofia’s sobs in the hallway and Marco’s comforting voice.

I stood there, my palm burning, the wound on my forehead feeling as if it had split open again.

The air was thick with the smell of blood and smoke.

Then Chloe’s voice came from behind me.

“Bad woman, you made my mommy cry again! Get out! Why don’t you just die? I hate you!”

I turned.

She snatched the ashtray off the coffee table and hurled it at me.

“If you ever come back, I’ll kill you!”

I didn’t dodge.

Pain exploded in my forehead again.

The way she glared at me… she was a stranger. Not the little girl who used to cling to my legs and refuse to let go.

That was the moment something in me truly died.

I looked at her and said, word by word:

“You don’t have to pretend anymore.”

“Have whoever you want for a mother. I don’t care anymore.”

Then I picked up my suitcase and left.

When I reached airport security, my mother sent another message.

“When are you going to learn to just give in to Sofia?”

“If you can’t keep your man, that’s your problem. How can you take it out on her?”

“Do you have any idea she almost did something stupid just now?”

“Come back and apologize to her immediately. Otherwise, don’t ever call us family again—”

More messages were piling up.

I switched off my phone.

And while my parents and Marco were busy comforting Sofia, a video call from Chloe lit up the family group chat.

“Waaah… the bad woman said I don’t have to pretend anymore. She said it doesn’t matter to her who I want to be my mommy.”

“Does she know? Does she not want me anymore?”
