No One Came Chapter 08

“She had no vital signs on arrival, and livor mortis was present. We estimate the time of death was between six and eight p.m. last night.”

“If she had been brought in earlier, we might have had a chance. But now… there’s nothing we can do.”

“Between six and eight last night…”

Mom repeated the words, her expression shifting from devastation to sheer terror.

That was during dinner.

“She wasn’t throwing a tantrum…”

Mom sank to the floor, clutching her head.

“She was already…”

She still couldn’t say the last word.

Just then, a nurse brought my phone over and handed it to Mom.

On the lock screen was an unread message from Nico, sent that morning:

“Sis, stop pretending. Mom said you didn’t go to school today. You’re so getting yelled at.”

Mom opened the chat history.

The night before, Nico had sent the first message:

“Sis, did the peanut sauce taste good? hahahaha.”

I hadn’t replied.

Then he sent another:

“You’re not really allergic, are you? You’re faking, right?”

Still no reply.

The last one read:

“You’re so boring. Can’t even take a joke.”

Mom stared at the screen, her entire body rigid.

When Dad arrived at the hospital, Mom was sitting on a bench in the hallway.

“Where’s Adriana?”

Dad ran over, his forehead slick with sweat.

Mom looked up at him, her voice flat and cold.

“She died at six o’clock last night. While we were eating dinner, she was already dead.”
