He Locked Me Out Now He’s Begging Me Back Chapter 43
Three weeks after the divorce was finalized, I used the money from the house sale and my savings to buy a condo downtown.
Two bedrooms, one living room—not huge, but only fifteen minutes from my office. The floor-to-ceiling windows faced east, and on clear mornings, the sunlight reached all the way to the dining table.
The deed had only one name on it.
Mine.
My parents came in from out of state just as I was unpacking the last box of dishes.
My mother took a slow look around the living room and smiled. “It’s brighter than it looked in the pictures.”
My father opened the door to the second bedroom. Inside, I had already set up my bookshelf and a new workstation. A few plants sat beside the monitors.
“This room gets good light,” he said automatically. “If you ever have grandkids, you could fit a little bed in here—”
My mother touched his arm.
He stopped at once and cleared his throat. “Of course, it works even better as an office. Makes it easier if you’re working from home.”
He didn’t ask if I would remarry. He didn’t tell me to leave room for someone who did not exist.
I smiled and pulled open the drawer beside the desk.
Stationery, cables, project materials—everything was sorted and put away. The wall-length bookshelf held only my books, my photo albums, and the few things that had truly belonged to me from the old house.
“I’m not planning to put a child’s bed in here,” I said. “And I’m not planning for anyone else to move in. At least for now, I want to use it according to my own needs.”
