The DNA Test That Backfired Chapter 12

After everyone was gone, only the three of us remained in the dining room.

Zane’s mother came over and gripped my hand, tears streaming down her face.

“Arlette, I was wrong. I almost believed her.”

She choked on her words. “That child saved Zane’s life.”

“You kept this hidden for so many years and suffered such a terrible injustice… We’re the ones who have wronged you.”

Zane’s father sighed, his tone much gentler now.

“This was Zane’s fault,” he said, looking at me. “You have always been good to this family.”

“For Teddy’s sake, for saving Zane, and for the sake of your three years of marriage… could you give him another chance?”

“Please don’t let it come to divorce.”

I shook my head.

“Mr. Marino, Mrs. Marino,” I said, “thank you for your kindness these past three years. I am sincerely grateful.”

“But some things, once broken, can never be put back together.”

Zane suddenly collapsed to his knees in front of me.

“Arlette, I was wrong.” He was crying so hard he could barely form a sentence.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, to you and to Teddy.”

“Don’t leave, okay? Let’s start over…”
