After Six Years The Alpha Begs For My Return Chapter 15
I lowered my head and clasped her hand.
“I’m fine.” She looked at me. “I know about Ophelia. After you left, Gideon came to see me at every winter solstice moon banquet, and Ophelia came, too. I won’t comment on their situation. But there is one thing I have to tell you.”
She paused, catching her breath several times before she could manage the next sentence.
“That child is not Gideon’s.”
Sunlight slanted through the window, spilling across the white bedsheets.
The air in the room seemed to freeze. Gideon’s wolf-scent went razor-sharp for an instant before he forced it back down, keeping it from the bed.
All the blood drained from Ophelia’s face.
She staggered back, knocking the bowl of soup off the bedside table. It shattered on the floor, broth splashing everywhere.
“Mom…” Her voice cracked. “What are you talking about? You must be delirious from the fever.”
My mother didn’t look at her.
She looked at me and spoke each word with careful clarity.
“Before you left, Gideon came to me. He said he had never touched Ophelia and that the child could not be his. At the time, the baby hadn’t been born, so there was no blood sample for independent testing. The elders only had Ophelia’s testimony and the medical records from that night. Gideon had no proof, but he asked me to believe him.”
