After Six Years The Alpha Begs For My Return Chapter 18
He glanced at the screen, a faint crease forming between his brows, then turned to me.
“Avery. Something’s come up.”
“What is it?”
“News on the living donor search you asked for my help with. Wolf transplants require not only standard tissue matching but also an evaluation of blood-wolf compatibility, so suitable donors are rare. My contact says the other party is willing to hand the matching list over to the hospital, but they want to see you first.”
“What’s the condition?”
He turned the phone so I could see the screen.
There was only one line of text, but it sent a chill straight down my spine.
*Let Avery come see me herself. She knows where to find me.*
Reese held the phone out casually.
But the message made my fingers tighten against the paper cup.
*Let Avery come see me herself. She knows where to find me.*
No signature. No contact name.
But I knew.
In all of Gray Harbor, only one person would phrase a message that way—a man who had pulled me out of a river with his own hands twelve years ago, then vanished without a trace.
I handed the phone back to Reese and tipped my head back, finishing the last of the now-cold coffee. The bitterness slid down my throat and settled in my stomach.
“It’s Ray Corrigan,” I said.
Reese arched a brow and tossed the unlit cigarette into a trash can. He didn’t ask who Corrigan was. He only said, “Are you going?”
“Yes.” I crushed the empty cup and threw it away. “But first, I need to get my mother’s surgical plan finalized.”
He nodded, took another phone from his inner pocket, and walked to the end of the corridor to make a call.
He spoke quietly, his tone steady, occasionally dropping coded phrases from Tidewatch’s trade routes.
I leaned against the wall and watched his back, suddenly remembering my third year in Paris. He’d knocked on my apartment door in the middle of the night and handed me a bag of fever medicine and a plane ticket to Venice.
“Get out of town for a few days,” he’d said. “Someone traced the trade office. They might follow your temporary pack status back to you.”
