The Fourth Life She Guarded Me Chapter 15
Paloma drew her gaze back and smiled at me.
“Good. You said it.”
I said nothing.
For some reason, a chill ran down my spine.
—
The instant the entrance opened, everyone rushed inside.
In the blink of an eye, they were gone.
I was about to go in, too, but Paloma caught my arm.
I turned back to her, confused.
“The entrance is only open for a limited time. We need to hurry.”
Paloma looked at me.
“That’s a teleportation gate.”
“Yes. So?”
“Even if I hold your hand, carry you, or tie you to me, when we go through a gate like that, there’s still a chance we’ll be separated.”
I said nothing.
“The Threshold is huge. If we get separated, where am I supposed to find you? Do you want me to starve to death?”
I said nothing.
“Forget it. We’re not going. We’re going home.”
Paloma turned and started walking away, dragging me with her.
I quickly caught hold of her.
“There are major opportunities inside. We can’t miss them. And you going hungry for a little while won’t kill you. We might not even be separated.”
“I don’t care about opportunities. They mean nothing to me.”
“Then what does matter to you?”
“Being full.”
“…”
I pressed a hand to my forehead.
“Paloma, you need to understand that with my current strength, you aren’t actually full every day.”
“It’s still better than nothing.”
“So if I find an opportunity inside and my power increases, won’t you be able to eat more from me later?”
Paloma fell silent, seeming to think.
I immediately pressed my case.
“And we might not be separated. Even if we are, the heartbond will let us sense each other. You can find me, and I’ll find you.”
Her gaze lowered. She was still thinking.
By then, the entrance had already begun to waver.
It was about to close.
There was no more time.
I grabbed her and ran straight for it.
“Paloma, if you want to be full, you have to take a little risk. We have to go in. Be bold.”
Just before we plunged into the teleportation gate, I felt her arms tighten around my waist.
Someone murmured something in my ear.
But the wind was too loud. I couldn’t hear it.
The next second, we entered the gate together.
The world spun around me.
And then I lost consciousness.
