Clara was the name I had chosen for the daughter growing inside me.

 

My husband himself had once told me that name belonged only to our child.

He claimed he was just taking care of the wife and daughter his brother had left behind.

 

I nodded.

 

I walked over and adjusted his tie.

 

“The cake is beautiful,” I said, my voice even.

 

“Who is Clara?”

 

No one dared to answer.

 

I kept smiling.

 

“Enjoy yourselves.”

 

“I’m a little tired. I’m heading home.”

 

I turned and left.
