My sister was pregnant with my boyfriend’s baby. My boyfriend of eight years. And my family was giving me thirty days to get out.
Even more ridiculous, I was the one who’d thrown the baby shower that exposed it all.
She’d told me the father had run off ages ago.
I’d had a moment of weakness and handled everything, from the catering to the decorations. I even set up the livestream for her.
I never imagined the ultrasound photo splashed across the big screen at the end would be captioned “Baby Cole.”
Cole was my boyfriend’s last name.
A moment later, Evan stepped out of the crowd, wrapped his arm around my sister, Sloane, and kissed her in front of everyone.
She didn’t pull away. If anything, she smiled and leaned into him.
Cheers and applause erupted around us, as if they’d all been waiting for this.
I was the only one who didn’t know my boyfriend was the father of my sister’s child.
And the only one who didn’t know they’d already divvied up my apartment.
Someone shoved a piece of paper into my hand.
I had thirty days to move out of the downstairs unit I’d lived in for years so they could make room for the baby.
But I’d paid every utility bill, every repair, for that place.

My family raised their glasses, toasting the new life ahead of them.
In a room full of applause, not a single person spoke up for me.

They were waiting for me to cry, to beg, to stay behind and clean up their mess like I always did.
But all I did was tighten my grip on that piece of paper.
