When my parents transferred my college fund to my orphaned cousin, I didn’t make a scene. I just opened an account they couldn’t touch.
I saw the email by accident.
The money they’d been saving for my college for years now had a new beneficiary.
All the paperwork was done.

When my parents realized I was standing in the doorway, they didn’t even look rattled.

“You’ve always done well. You can make it on your own.”
They said it like it was the most natural thing in the world.
As if taking away my future was some kind of compliment.
Tessa had been living in our house for a year, and I’d spent that year making concessions.
My study became a studio for her easel and books.
My desk was shoved into a corner of my bedroom.
She needed therapy, and my parents paid for it without a second thought.
She wanted to learn tennis, and they hired the most expensive private coach they could find.
But when I wanted to sign up for an SAT prep course, suddenly the family budget was tight.
The moment Tessa overheard, she held out her new laptop.
“Don’t worry, Nora. You can borrow mine.”
Pride bloomed across my parents’ faces.
They praised her for being thoughtful, for knowing how to share.
As for whether that laptop had been paid for with money meant for my course, no one seemed to care.
I took the computer and thanked her.
Not because I was grateful.
Because I finally understood that in this house, anger was useless.
The second I said anything, they would remind me that she didn’t have a mother.
If I refused her “kindness,” I’d become the villain who bullied an orphan.
So I stopped fighting.
I had just turned eighteen, and my parents forgot my birthday because they were busy taking her to tour colleges.
That day, I took my ID and went to the bank.
I opened a checking account for daily expenses and a separate account just for savings.
I was the only one who knew the password.
My first paycheck from my part-time job at the bookstore went straight into it.
My parents had taken the money they’d saved for me.
What I was saving for was my next step—one they would never be able to take away.
As for where that step would lead, I had no intention of letting anyone in this house know.
