My father always said that for his biological daughter, I had a strange aversion to cameras.

So when the Christmas card featured only the four of them, he didn’t bother with an explanation.

I was the one who took the photo.

I’d spent ages adjusting the angle, making sure everyone looked their best.

My father had his arm around his new family, smiling like he owned the world.

When the shutter clicked, I was standing alone behind the tripod.

He came over to inspect the picture and nodded, satisfied.

“You really do take the best photos of us.”

I did.

I’d photographed every birthday in that house.

Every holiday gathering.

I’d photographed them opening presents, blowing out candles, and pulling each other into hugs.

My shadow fell across every happy moment they shared.

And not a single photo included me.

A few days later, the printed cards arrived.

My father had ordered two hundred copies of the photo I took.

Beneath it, the caption read: The Brooks Family of Four.

I counted them once.

Then I counted again.

There was no mistake.

He hadn’t forgotten me.

He just didn’t count me.

At dinner, he brought up new props for my stepsister’s drama club.

The cost was enough to make my grip tighten on my fork.

My stepsister, Sadie, said she was thrilled.

My father agreed on the spot, the number rolling off his tongue as if it were nothing.

I quietly mentioned my photography class.

I was almost out of film and running low on photo paper.

My father frowned.

“Can’t you make what you have last a little longer?”

He didn’t even ask how much I needed.

In this house, my stepsister’s hobbies were investments.

Mine were an afterthought.

That was when I finally understood: no matter how perfect my pictures were, he was never going to turn the camera on me.

So I didn’t argue.

I finished everything on my plate and carried my own glass to the kitchen.

Back in my room, I opened my laptop.

A folder on the desktop was labeled Escape Route.

Inside were photography scholarship requirements from schools across the country, along with admissions data for the Rhode Island School of Design.

I’d already been using the school darkroom to build my portfolio.

Every photograph was another dollar saved for my ticket out.

That night, for the first time, I stopped wondering how to make my father notice me.

I only wanted to know one thing.

If I really left, how long would it take this self-proclaimed family of four to realize I didn’t enjoy standing outside the frame?

I’d been pushed there.
