The Wife He Couldn’t Bring Home Chapter 12
The next afternoon, while I was keeping my mom company in the yard trimming herbs, someone rang the doorbell again.
This time, it was Paige.
She was wearing a plain, modest suit. Her hair hung loose, and her face was devoid of makeup. With her reddened eyes, she looked absolutely pitiful.
As soon as my mom saw it was her, her expression immediately hardened.
“What are you doing here?”
“Mrs. Brennan, I know I wronged Maya. I came here today to apologize to her.” As Paige spoke, her knees buckled as if she were about to kneel. “Maya, whatever I did, it was all my fault. Will you forgive me? I’m willing to step down and give Cole back to you—”
I sat in the yard without moving and slowly set down the work in my hands.
Owen walked out of the house and gave her a look. He didn’t say a word, merely handing his phone to me.
I took the phone, opened the camera to record a video, and aimed it at the woman putting on such a performance at the door.
“Paige, get up.” My voice was calm. “Who are you kneeling for? There are a lot of neighbors around here. Are you hoping someone will film this and post it online, saying that Maya is bullying the executive director of the Mercer Foundation?”
Paige’s expression stiffened slightly, but she quickly reverted to that tearful look. “I didn’t… I sincerely came to apologize to you…”
“Then tell me,” I said, holding up the phone and taking a step forward. “That day at the shopping district, did you roll down the stairs yourself, or did I push you?”
Her eyes flickered. “Maya, the past is in the past. My baby is gone, so why must you—”
“You know better than anyone how you lost your baby.” I kept the camera pointed at her. “As for that fall in my bathroom, you smashed your own head into the glass to leave that blood. You know that, too. And as for Cole—before I left Boston, I had already reported that private clinic, the corporate security guards who held me down, and that private doctor to my lawyer and the police. I’m not going to argue with you today. You and Cole can explain the rest to the police.”
Paige’s face finally changed. “You called the police? Maya, you’re crazy—”Â
