The Wife He Couldn’t Bring Home Chapter 13

The sound of police sirens happened to echo from the end of the alley.

Paige abruptly stood up, her pitiful act vanishing without a trace. “Maya! You bitch! Why are you acting so high and mighty? Just because Cole doesn’t love you anymore, you want to destroy me? You—”

The curses she spat out were incredibly vicious. I held up the phone and recorded every single word clearly. By the time she was tired of cursing and paused to catch her breath, two police officers had already walked up to the door.

After asking about the situation, Paige was escorted to the police station to cooperate with the investigation. When she was put into the police car, she was still turning her head to curse at me. Her hair was a mess, and her face was streaked with tears. She looked exactly like a lunatic.

That night, I posted that video online. The title was just two words: *Raw Footage*.

The next morning, the whole city of Boston exploded with the news.

The Mercer Group was a defense contractor. Cole had used the company’s security team to pin someone to an operating table, and the private clinic and the foundation were both being funded through corporate accounts and the Mercer family foundation. This was no longer just an issue of personal morality; it was a minefield of misappropriating company resources, compliance violations, and corporate governance failures.

Paige was the first to be taken away by the police for investigation, followed closely by that private doctor. Cole was suspected of orchestrating forced medical procedures and illegal imprisonment. The board of directors held an emergency meeting overnight, and the Pentagon’s contract review simultaneously blew up. The stock price plummeted in response, and the internet went absolutely wild. Cole cheating on his wife with her best friend, forcing his wife into an abortion, hosting a banquet for the other woman, and even using his subordinates to tie his ex-wife to an operating table—every single piece of dirt was dug up and exposed to the public.

Old Mr. Mercer was so furious that he ended up in the hospital. He slammed his hand on the table in front of all the directors. “Suspend him from all his duties! The Mercer family can’t afford this disgrace!”

Cole sat in his office, looking at the viral headlines on his computer screen and the suspension resolution sent by the board of directors. He remained quiet for a long time.

Finally, he crushed out his cigarette and picked up the photo frame on his desk to take a look. It was taken when he and Maya got married. She was wearing a wedding dress, her eyes crinkling with her smile.

He placed the photo frame face down on the desk.

When the news reached me, Owen was in the yard with me, helping me repot the roses.

My mom ran out excitedly with her phone in her hand. “Maya! Look at the news! The board of directors suspended him!”

“Mhm,” I murmured, continuing to fill the flower pot with soil. Owen helped me straighten one of the rose bushes. His cuffs were stained with mud, and his profile looked especially gentle in the afternoon light.

“This one’s done.” He dusted the soil off his hands, tilted his head, and smiled at me. “It should bloom beautifully next year.”

I looked into his eyes and smiled as well.

“Yeah, they will bloom beautifully next year.”
