From A Humiliating Bet To The Boss He Can’t Have Chapter 07

Grant looked up sharply. “Why?”

The assistant opened two emails, his expression complicated.

“Mr. Whitmore, these are the emails you sent Ms. Ellis when she turned down the Chicago headquarters position the first two times.”

In the first, he had asked me to stay because Lily was about to go through an important school transition and needed me there.

The second had only one sentence:

[I don’t do long-distance relationships. If you go to Chicago, this is where we end.]

The sender line was crystal clear: Grant Whitmore.

Grant looked at the words he had written with his own hands, and his face slowly drained of color.

He remembered that night. I had already packed my bags and asked him carefully if we could try long-distance.

And he had answered coldly, “If you leave, don’t expect me to wait for you.”

The next day, I withdrew my application.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want those two opportunities. He was the one who had used our relationship, and Lily, to force me to stay.

Grant slammed the tablet onto the table.

“Did all of you know about this?”

No one answered. Some lowered their heads over their drinks. Some avoided his gaze.

Sloane, however, let out a derisive laugh. “She gave it up herself. No one put a gun to her head.”

Grant fixed his stare on her.

“The first time, who was it that told me if Mara really cared about Lily, she should stay and help her through that crucial school transition?”

Sloane swirled her drink. “That was me. I was just giving you a reminder.”

“A reminder?” His voice turned icy. “By then the school counselor had already arranged everything. Lily didn’t need her to give up that opportunity at all. You deliberately exaggerated the situation so I would pressure her into staying.”

There wasn’t a trace of guilt on Sloane’s face.

“So what? She was your girlfriend. Giving up her career for your daughter was perfectly normal.”
