From A Humiliating Bet To The Boss He Can’t Have Chapter 15
After Sloane’s husband formally filed for divorce, every social circle she used to belong to shut her out.
She called Grant again and again. He never picked up.
By then, Grant was already on a flight to Chicago.
The next day, after my morning meeting, I went downstairs and saw him outside my office building.
He clearly hadn’t slept. His shirt was wrinkled, his eyes were bloodshot, and one button on his coat was done up wrong.
In the past, when Lily had a fever or the school needed a signature at the last minute, I had always been the one waiting anxiously outside.
Grant would arrive late every time, composed, as if everyone else was supposed to wait for him.
Now it was his turn to cross a thousand miles and wait for me in disarray.
“Mara, we need to talk.”
“I have another meeting in ten minutes.”
“Five will do.”
He opened a black velvet box.
Inside was the pair of cuff links I had returned, engraved on the back with the names Grant, Mara, and Lily.
“I know I was wrong.” His voice was hoarse. “I saw the emails and the group chats. You were never after money.”
I looked at him.
“So you came to me because the evidence finally proved I was innocent?”
“No.” He shook his head quickly. “I want you to come back. We can start over. Lily needs you, too—”
“Don’t use Lily to keep me.”
His face went white.
I closed the box and pushed it back toward him.
“You believed Sloane. You let them make bets on me. You put that agreement in my hand and kept asking me to prove myself. Now that her lies have been exposed, you’re finally willing to admit I’m not a gold digger.”
“I can make it up to you.”
“No, you can’t.”
Before I turned away, I looked at him one last time.
“Grant, Sloane may have handed you the knife. But every time, you were the one who chose to use it.”
