He Tested Me With Prenup I Left Him With Regret Chapter 29

That winter, the first exhibition I curated on my own officially opened.

The theme was records of ordinary people in motion.

Old train tickets, apartment leases, acceptance letters, work IDs.

Papers that looked insignificant by themselves, but together became proof of a person leaving one place and starting over somewhere else.

The museum director asked why I had chosen that theme.

I said, “Because a lot of life’s turning points don’t come with dramatic goodbyes.”

“Sometimes it’s just a ticket, and a button you finally decide to press.”

Lucy came on opening day.

She didn’t let Grant bring her.

She didn’t come with any of the Holloway relatives.

She stood at the entrance of the gallery with a backpack on, holding the digital ticket I had sent her.

When she saw me, she glanced around first.

“He didn’t come.”

“I know.”

“And I didn’t bring any message from him.”

“Thank you.”

She visibly relaxed.

We walked slowly past the display cases.

When we stopped in front of a university acceptance letter, she stood there for a long time.

“Were you really scared when you accepted your offer back then?”

“Yes.”

“But you didn’t look scared at all.”

“You can be scared and still leave.”

She thought about that.

“I always used to think brave people weren’t supposed to feel sad.”

“That’s not true.”

I pointed to an old luggage tag inside a case.

“Being brave just means that even while you’re hurting, you still know where you’re going.”

She looked up at me.

“Do you know now?”

“Yes,” I said. “I do.”

After the exhibit, we had dinner at a corner bistro nearby.

Lucy talked about school, her friends, and the colleges she wanted to apply to.
