He Tested Me With Prenup I Left Him With Regret Chapter 02
When the boarding announcement came on, the delivery I had scheduled in advance arrived at Grant’s office.
Before long, someone in the family group chat posted an unboxing video.
Inside the box were my engagement ring, the keys to the house, every gift Grant had ever given me, and a folder.
Inside the folder was an Excel ledger detailing the last four years. Plane tickets, car insurance, ER bills—every expense was listed with a date and a scanned receipt. After deducting the portions I had already paid myself, the total came to $24,318.72.
Tucked into the last page was a cashier’s check for that exact amount.
Someone laughed. “What is this, a settlement invoice for four years of service?”
“Or is she saying the breakup payout wasn’t enough?”
Celeste snatched up the ledger. “She listed all this to remind Grant she spent four years with him. Just wait. After the lawyer’s letter comes the demand for compensation.”
But Grant didn’t laugh.
He flipped through the pages one by one, his expression growing darker. In the offset columns were expenses he had long since forgotten—many of them costs I had covered myself while taking care of Lucy.
After a long while, he asked quietly, “What if she really just wants us to owe each other nothing?”
Celeste scoffed. “She’s gotten used to this life. How could she possibly go back to being ordinary? Grant, you’re getting awfully sentimental over a charity case.”
The video cut off there.
I exited every group chat we shared and blocked their numbers one by one.
As I got in line to board, my lawyer sent a confirmation: Grant’s attorney had been notified that from now on, all communication would go through legal channels only.
Right after that, an email from my academic advisor arrived.
She welcomed me to the University of Chicago.
And reminded me to report on time for orientation next week.
I put my phone away and looked out at the bright sky beyond the jet bridge.
This time, I wasn’t looking back.
