He Tested Me With Prenup I Left Him With Regret Chapter 32
When Lucy graduated from high school, she mailed me an invitation.
She had invited Grant, too.
“If you don’t want to come, I’ll understand,” she said on the phone. “If you do come, I promise you won’t have to sit together.”
I laughed.
“It’s your graduation. You don’t need to manage the adults’ emotions for them.”
“So you’ll come?”
“Yes.”
On the day of the ceremony, Grant sat on the other side of the auditorium.
We saw each other from a long distance.
He didn’t come over.
Afterward, Lucy hugged her father first, then ran through the crowd to find me.
Grant stayed where he was.
He didn’t follow.
He didn’t ask her to carry a message.
At last, he had learned to respect my refusal.
But that wasn’t a change worth turning back for.
It was simply what he should have known how to do all along.
Lucy slipped her arm through mine and took me to meet her friends.
She had been accepted to a university in Chicago and planned to study child psychology.
“I want to understand why some adults always say they’re doing things for the child, but never ask what the child actually needs.”
I looked at her.
“That may take a long time to study.”
“That’s okay.”
She smiled.
“I have time.”
I smiled, too.
The time those people had once stolen from me no longer meant only loss.
It could also become the new life that grows, day by day, after you choose to start again.
