I Was The Mafia’s Maid Now I’m Their Regret Chapter 06

Chloe was warm and outgoing.

Even though I didn’t talk much, she always came over to chat.

Before long, the four of us had become close.

That day, she looked at me and asked,

“Want to go out tonight?”

I shook my head.

“No, I still have some things to do.”

“You’re busy every single day. What are you even up to?”

She leaned toward me curiously. I reached out and gathered up the papers on my desk.

They were mathematical models for encrypted communication I had been working on.

They were important.

They would determine whether I got into that research project and whether I could one day make a living as a cryptographic engineer.

On the first day of school, I had contacted the project lead.

After reading through my research, he’d nodded.

“You have a strong record. Do you have any letters of recommendation?”

I shook my head.

“No. I don’t have any mentors who know me well enough to write one.”

The smile on his face faded slightly.

For a second, his expression reminded me of my family.

Calm, flat, as if to say: *So that’s all you are.*

But he still said, “The materials are solid. Report in tomorrow.”

When I turned and walked out of his office, the sounds of the hallway seemed to drift far away.

I should have been happy.

No one here was making me complete a full year of work only to tell me it didn’t count.

No one ignored my messages, and no one could take what was mine with a single word from the head of the family and hand it to someone else.

But I still couldn’t smile.

I didn’t even know what I was disappointed about.

It was like I had wanted something for years, and now that I finally held it in my hands, I didn’t know what to do with it.
