I Was The Mafia’s Maid Now I’m Their Regret Chapter 09
I really liked it here.
People gave each other space.
If there were things you didn’t want to talk about, no one forced you to explain.
A week later, we flew to the competition.
We won gold.
The prize was thirty thousand dollars.
When the money hit my account, I finally let out a long breath.
It was enough to cover my expenses for the next few years. I wouldn’t need my father’s approval for a single thing.
On the day of the awards ceremony, Luca posted an update.
It was a photo of the two of us together.
The comments section blew up almost immediately. People from school were all saying it was unfair to let the two of us be on the same team.
The underworld saw it, too: another Family had publicly acknowledged a Marino girl her own Family had never once mentioned.
I posted the first thing ever on my new account.
A photo of the gold trophy.
Chloe was the first to comment.
“My roommate is amazing!”
The classmates I had gotten to know also filled the comments with congratulations.
I looked at the screen and smiled.
When I got back to the dorm, I took my three roommates out for steak.
Chloe raised her glass.
“I knew you were going to win.”
Emma clapped enthusiastically beside her.
“I’m over here worried I’m going to fail a class this semester, and you’ve already won an international gold medal. That’s insane.”
I finished the red wine in my glass.
Since coming here, I had slowly gotten used to people saying encouraging things to me.
The voices that used to weigh me down were growing more and more distant.
Now, the name people remembered was simply Cosima.
Not someone’s eldest daughter, not someone’s sister.
I had finally become myself.
