Caius froze.
“What homicide?”
The two officers didn’t answer him right away.
Their eyes fell on my mother, collapsed on the living room floor, and their expressions changed at once.
“What happened to her?”
The younger officer rushed inside and crouched beside my mother.
He checked her breathing, then felt for a pulse in her neck.
He looked up and shouted toward the door, “Call an ambulance! Now!”
A few minutes later, the ambulance arrived.
Two paramedics rushed in with their equipment.
“What’s the patient’s condition?”
“Arrhythmia. Prepare to defibrillate.”
They pulled open my mother’s collar and attached the electrodes.
When the shock hit, my mother’s body jerked violently, then fell heavily back to the floor.
I floated above them, watching them fight to save her, my own hands useless.
“Mom, hold on.”
Caius stood a few feet away, brushing imaginary dust off his pants.
“Doctors, don’t waste your time.”
“She’s acting. Meredith sent her here to make a scene.”
The young officer shot to his feet, rushed over, and grabbed Caius by the collar.
“She’s barely breathing, and you’re telling me she’s acting?”
