My Mother’s Perfect AI Lied And Left Me For Dead Chapter 25
“After I got out, I never went back to research. I never touched another children’s device. I do laundry at a care home, and I donate everything I earn to child-help organizations.”
“Mo, I’ve changed. Can you give me one chance?”
“You served your sentence because you had to answer for what you did. You donate money because that’s your choice.”
I looked at her.
“Neither of those is the price for getting a daughter back.”
Claire’s hand slowly fell.
“I’m not trying to buy you back. I just… I wanted to make you a grilled cheese sandwich. You loved those when you were little.”
Those words brought back the cold concrete floor.
Back then, she had also promised to make me sandwiches, buy me new shoes, take me to the hospital.
But those promises had only come after I died.
“My mother in this life has already made me plenty of them,” I said. “She keeps the burnt side for herself. My shoes aren’t expensive, but they always fit. When I say something hurts, she asks where first.”
Claire covered her mouth, sobs leaking through her fingers.
“I have my own father and mother now. I have a husband and a daughter. Everything you missed, someone else already did with care.”
