“Now that she doesn’t want you, you’re trying to pin all the blame on me?”
The judge rapped the gavel, ordering her to be quiet.
But it was as if Tessa had finally ripped off her mask for good.
“I didn’t send it by accident.”
Gritting her teeth, she enunciated every word.
“I just didn’t want them to get married.”
Ellis shot to his feet.
“Tessa!”
“What? Does the truth hurt?”

“You were protecting me just fine when you told them not to investigate, weren’t you?”
“You even said that as long as you were there, no one could touch me.”
I had heard those words before.
Hearing them again, from her, felt like nothing.
But for Ellis, it was as if he were hearing them for the very first time.
His shoulders slumped. His lips trembled.
“So you knew what you were doing the whole time?”
“Yes.”

“And I also knew Coralie was pregnant after she fell.”
