He Accused Me Of Stealing But I Heard The Truth Chapter 05

Maisie was taken for plasma exchange immediately.

I stood outside the isolation room, watching the nurses wheel her small bed away. Her arm was strapped to a board, an oxygen tube obscuring half her face.

Derek stood at the other end of the corridor.

“The costs are handled,” he said. “Now let’s talk about the agreement.”

The lawyer placed the papers in front of me again.

“This document includes a voluntary acknowledgment of paternity and a proposed custody consent order. Once signed, Derek will petition for sole legal decision-making authority and primary residential custody. Pending the court hearing, he would receive temporary medical decision-making authority, and Maisie would be added to the Weston family’s private insurance. You would have supervised visitation only, and taking her out of Chicago would require court approval.”

“I’m not signing.”

Derek didn’t seem surprised.

“Do you really think you’re in a position to refuse?”

I walked over, pulled the card from my coat, and slipped it back into his suit pocket.

“Paying was your decision. I never agreed to trade my daughter for it.”

His face darkened.

“You really think I can’t make you?”

The steady rhythm of the monitor in the isolation room was the only sound.

“I never took your money six years ago,” I said. “And I won’t let this money become a leash today.”

He stared at me.

[How does she plan to pay me back? By washing dishes in a cafeteria?]

[Why has she never touched that account? Does she not know about it, or does she hate anything connected to me that much?]

Derek stopped letting Rachel handle Maisie’s expenses.

He had Henry pull the original account-opening records and ordered the information security department to restore all access logs from six years ago.
