He Was Reborn To Claim Me But I’m Already Married Chapter 30
The baby moved gently inside me, as if sensing my fear.
I laid a hand over my stomach.
“No.”
Adrian’s head jerked up.
Perhaps only then did he truly realize that there had been another life in that car.
For the first time, raw fear appeared on his face.
During the recess, ignoring the bailiffs, he braced himself against the table and struggled to his feet.
His injured leg couldn’t support him.
He crashed heavily to the floor.
“Claire, I didn’t know…”
“I didn’t know you were pregnant.”
Daniel stepped in front of me, shielding me from his view.
I did not go near him.
“If I hadn’t been pregnant, would what you did have been forgivable?”
Adrian lay on the floor, utterly still.
Suddenly, I thought of my previous life.
Before I died, he had stood just as close to me.
He kept demanding to know where Evelyn was. Until I took my last breath, he never once asked if I was in pain.
Now, at last, he had.
But it was far too late.
In the end, the jury found him guilty on all counts.
On the day of sentencing, the doctor confirmed that one of Adrian’s legs had sustained permanent damage.
His lawyer asked the judge to take his physical condition into consideration.
The judge looked at him.
“Your injuries were sustained while law enforcement was stopping an ongoing felony.”
“They do not mitigate the harm suffered by your victim.”
Adrian was sentenced to a lengthy prison term.
His assistant paid the price for his own role as well.
Before the proceedings concluded, Adrian asked to say a few final words.
He did not say again that I still loved him.
In a hoarse voice, he only asked, “In our previous life, right before you died, you said Evelyn was still alive.”
“That was true, wasn’t it?”
Evelyn was sitting right behind me.
She tightened her grip on my hand.
I looked at Adrian.
“It was true.”
“She has her own life, and she has the right to decide who knows about it.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Tears slid down his face.
In the previous life, he had searched for more than ten years.
He had blamed me for being cruel, for deceiving him even as I died.
And yet the one truth I had left him, he had never believed.
“Claire, I’m sorry.”
It was the first genuine apology he had ever given me in either life.
There were no awkward gifts sent through Evelyn.
No expensive everlasting flowers.
No smug certainty that I would come back to him.
But I only took the hand Daniel held out to me.
“Adrian, you were the one who told me not to haunt you in the next life.”
“In this life, I did exactly that.”
The bailiffs wheeled him away.
The doors closed behind him, and he did not look back.
