He Priced Me At A Penny So I Married Another Chapter 08
I nudged the bag at my feet farther under the seat.
“You took someone else’s one cent and agreed to let her take me home. You can explain that yourself. My marriage is none of your business from now on.”
Something crashed on his end of the line.
Tori moved closer, murmuring a few words to him. Her voice came through the phone.
“Don’t get worked up. Her quilt’s still torn. What man is going to welcome her moving in with something like that? Give it a little time, and she’ll—”
“Get out!”
Derek roared so suddenly that even Mark froze.
Then he said my name again.
“I’m throwing her out right now. Lydia, that house is still ours. Come back, and I’ll move all your things in.”
I hung up and left the group chat.
Mark tried to keep persuading me, but Everett had already called over a conductor.
I pointed to Mark’s camera and explained that he’d been filming me since the park. The conductor took him away. Even as he was led off, he was still saying it was all just a misunderstanding between friends.
At last, it was quiet.
I lowered my head and wiped at the corner of the quilt. The tissue snagged on the broken thread, leaving white flecks stuck to the fabric.
The more I wiped, the messier the thread became.
Everett cleared the small tray table and let me spread the quilt across it.
“Don’t touch it for now. We’ll find someone in Boston to look at it. Don’t pull out what’s left of the thread.”
I let go and stared at the exposed cotton. Suddenly, I couldn’t stop the tears.
“Before I left, I even wiped down the windowsill.”
“I thought he was going to move in that night. The new house was already cleaned. I thought we’d finally get to live a normal life.”
Everett pulled one side of the curtain closed, shielding us from the other passengers in the aisle.
When his shoulder came near, he paused for a beat, then settled beside me.
“You still have a lot of time ahead of you, Lydia.”
“Try to sleep for a while. Carol will come pick you up in the morning.”
I clutched his sleeve and cried until my eyes hurt.
He stayed there the whole time, until I finally fell asleep.
