After Lefting Me On The Bridge He Lost His Mind Chapter 02

After the IV drip, I went back to the apartment I had shared with Truett for four years.

I had always been the one paying the rent on our Brooklyn place.

Truett used to say that once he made director, we’d move into a bigger apartment in Manhattan.

Looking back, I was never really part of the future he’d imagined.

I booked movers to come in two hours.

While packing my clothes, I found a folded receipt in the inner pocket of one of Truett’s jackets.

The purchase date was three months ago—my birthday.

The customer name was Chloe.

It was for a twenty-thousand-dollar Rolex.

The last four digits of the credit card matched the supplementary card I’d given Truett years ago.

Back when his startup failed, his credit was a wreck. I had gotten him a high-limit card for emergencies.

On my birthday, he’d told me he was swamped with a project and sent me a fifty-two-dollar wire transfer.

I held the thin slip of paper, and the sheer absurdity of it was staggering.

He hadn’t had time for me on my birthday, but he’d had time to buy Chloe a twenty-thousand-dollar watch.

The lock turned. Truett came in smelling of alcohol, with Chloe trailing behind him.

The moment Chloe saw the boxes on the floor, she stopped short, her eyes instantly welling up.

“Mavis, what are you doing? This is all my fault. If I hadn’t gotten that flat tire and been so scared last night, Truett wouldn’t have rushed over. Please don’t try to scare him by moving out…”

Truett frowned, kicking aside a box at his feet.

“Mavis, are you done? You stood on a bridge for a little while. Do you really have to drag this out? Can you be a little more mature?”

“Truett, I have pneumonia.”

His gaze fixed on my face.

He started to lift a hand toward me, but then Chloe gave a soft little cough beside him.
