After Lefting Me On The Bridge He Lost His Mind Chapter 13

I had left completely. I hadn’t left a single personal item behind.

The iMessage group with his friends was still buzzing.

Ryan: [Truett, still no word this late? Mavis must be really pissed this time. This is on us, too—we never should’ve started that bet. Why don’t you just swallow your pride and apologize? We’ll cover the gift money.]

Leo: [What’s the big deal? A woman like Mavis, the kind who arranges everything for you, won’t last a day without you. She’s probably hiding somewhere crying right now. She’ll drag that suitcase right back by tomorrow morning.]

I heard that after Truett read those messages, he replied to the group, his eyes red:

[Go to hell. All of you.]

Then he smashed the glass coffee table with a single punch.

But none of that had anything to do with me anymore.

Austin’s weather was much milder than New York’s.

Half a month later, my pneumonia had cleared completely.

I threw all my energy into my work.

I no longer had to revise Truett’s proposals every night or patch up the holes in his projects. For the first time, all my skills were being used for my own career.

The general manager of the Southern branch saw my potential and handed me a major project that was on the verge of being lost.

“Mavis, if you can land this, the deputy director position at the end of the year is yours.”

In the conference room, the general manager clapped me on the shoulder.

“Thank you. I’ll give it everything I have.”

Things, on the other hand, were not going well for Truett.

He had grown used to me doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes. Over the past four years, more than half the proposals he submitted as director were ones I had stayed up all night to create.

Once I was gone, the intern he had so fiercely protected—Chloe—was nowhere near capable enough to fill my shoes.
