After Lefting Me On The Bridge He Lost His Mind Chapter 14
Three months later, the company’s annual bidding conference was held in Chicago.
It was also the first time I had seen Truett since I left.
I was wearing a sharply tailored ivory suit as I walked into the venue with the Southern branch team, and I ran right into them.
Truett had lost a lot of weight. The dark circles under his eyes were impossible to hide.
He stood in the crowd, clutching a packet of documents that were already crumpled in his hand.
“Mavis?”
His voice was hoarse, his eyes fixed on me, as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
The pale, coughing woman in the hospital room three months ago seemed like a completely different person from the one standing before him now.
Chloe stood behind him in a tight dress, entirely inappropriate for the occasion, the Rolex still on her wrist.
When she saw me, jealousy and panic flashed in her eyes, and she instinctively reached for Truett’s sleeve.
“Truett…”
But Truett shook her off and strode toward me.
“Mavis, where have you been these past three months? I couldn’t reach you. I went to the Austin branch to find you, but they wouldn’t let me up…”
His eyes reddened. He lifted a hand as if to touch me, but my assistant stepped between us, blocking him without a word.
I stopped and gave him a cool glance.
“Mr. Moretti, this is a professional setting. I am the project lead for the Southern branch in this bid, Mavis Castillo.”
“What project lead? Mavis, can you stop this?”Â
