“What the hell do you all take me for?”
My father’s hand shot out and slapped me hard across the face.
“You still have the nerve to call us your parents? Then you won’t stand in our house and scream at us.”
I hadn’t seen it coming. A sharp ringing exploded in my ear.
I slowly turned my head back to look at him.
“Don’t you ever touch me again.”
Gabriel stepped forward, wrapping an arm around my shoulders and positioning himself between me and my father.
“Thomas, let’s just talk. Don’t hit her.”
He lowered his head, his voice softening as he inspected my face.
“Mags, let me explain, okay?”
Sienna had followed them up. She squeezed between us and suddenly dropped to her knees on the carpet in front of me.
“Margot, this is all my fault. Please don’t fight with Gabe. Don’t blame your parents.”
She looked up at me, her face already wet with tears. “You can yell at me. Hit me if you want.”
Gabriel immediately let go of me and reached down to pull her to her feet.
“Mags, Sia’s pregnant. Whatever you have to say, say it to me.”
They clung to each other, a united front that somehow cast me as the villain.
I braced a hand against the wall, my voice still shaking.
“Let’s get a divorce, Gabriel. I won’t stand in your way anymore.”
He handed Sienna off to my mother and turned back to me, his expression hardening.
“Mags, you promised. You said you would never bring up divorce again.”
I looked him straight in the eye. Both of them.
“And you promised you would end it with her.”
He stepped closer, gripping my shoulders.
“After everything that happened, Sia lost you—her only friend. She has no one else.”
“You two used to be inseparable. Are you really going to leave her with nothing?”
Sienna pulled free from my mother’s grasp and sank back to her knees.
“I’m so sorry, Margot. It’s my fault. I couldn’t let Gabe go, so I came back to him.”
“I never wanted to take your place. I never even pressured him to divorce you.”
“I know it’s wrong. I just… I just wanted one person in my life who cared about me.”
