Rowan lived his life like a computer program. Once he processed the fact that we had broken up, he should have accepted it and disappeared. If we ever crossed paths again, it should have been as strangers.
But he came back the next day.
“Why are you here again?”
He acted as if he couldn’t see the irritation on my face.
“I won’t let Mia in our apartment again. If she comes over, I’ll make her wait downstairs. And I won’t drive her home alone anymore.”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Rowan, you’re like a student who memorized the answer key without understanding the question.”
I truly could not understand him.
“You’ve memorized a few rules, but you have no idea why they exist. The second the situation changes, you’ll be just as lost as you were before.”
He frowned.
“If relationships were a class,” I said, shaking my head, “you’d be failing.”
I thought back to the first time I met him.
My friend Amy had fractured her ankle, and I’d gone with her to a follow-up appointment. Rowan was her doctor.
At first, all I noticed was that he was handsome and impossibly cold. Then, later, I saw him around a corner in the hospital parking garage, feeding snacks to a skinny orange cat.
