He Left Me Broken Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 08

After the cat finished eating, it swiped at the back of his hand. A line of blood welled up almost instantly.

Rowan just looked down at it for two seconds.

The cat seemed to realize its mistake and began to inch away.

He let out a quiet sigh, then pulled another tube of treats from his pocket.

His expression didn’t change. His voice was perfectly flat.

“Come here.”

When the cat crept close again, he just stroked its back.

I stood around the corner, watching for a long time.

After that, I started asking him out for coffee or dinner. He turned me down every single time.

Eventually, I gave up. Once Amy’s follow-ups were done, I had no reason to go back to the hospital.

Two weeks later, at dusk, I walked out of the publishing house where I worked and saw Rowan standing by the curb.

I hurried over.

“Dr. Ashbourne, what are you doing here?”

“Why did you stop coming to the hospital?”

I froze.

“Because you made it clear you didn’t want to see me.”

He frowned.

“Who said I didn’t want to see you?”

“Are you serious?”

I honestly thought he was messing with me. “Fine,” I said lightly. “Agree to go on a real date with me, and I’ll come back.”

I expected him to tell me I was being ridiculous.

Instead, he said, “Okay.”

I stared at him for at least five seconds.

“Do you even know what a real date is?”

He didn’t answer. He just opened the passenger-side door for me, waited until I was seated, then reached across to buckle my seat belt before asking for my address.

Even after we started dating, he never really changed. I assumed Rowan was like that with everyone. It wasn’t until Mia moved back to Chicago that I realized he was capable of changing his plans for someone.

It just wasn’t for me.
