His Jealousy Sent Me Straight To The Ivy League Chapter 12
I remained standing across from him. I didn’t sit down.
“Why would you ask that?”
Conrad studied my face, searching for a reaction.
“Because you always wanted Emory. Harvard and Yale don’t seem like schools you would pick.”
“Don’t seem like schools I would pick?”
“Since freshman year, you’ve been researching programs around Atlanta. You always said the climate suited you better there, that there were more opportunities.”
He was exactly right.
And because he knew all of that so well, he had been able to wipe every Southern school I wanted clean off my list.
“Then who do you think changed them?” I asked.
Conrad was quiet for a few seconds.
“I don’t know. But if you want to look into it, I can help.”
I almost laughed in his face.
The person I was certain had done it was sitting in my living room, offering to help me investigate.
“No need,” I said. “Princeton already admitted me. Whoever changed it, at least the outcome wasn’t worse.”
I heard him let out a small, sharp breath of relief.
It was faint, but I heard it.
“That’s good.”
He stood up as if to leave, then paused.
“Inez, Princeton’s up north.”
“I know.”
“It’s far.”
“I know.”
He looked at me, his throat working.
“So what does this mean for us?”
I didn’t answer.
I only said, “We can talk about that later.”
Conrad nodded and headed for the door.
His hand touched the handle, then he turned back again.
“Oh, right. Talia wants to take you out to dinner to thank you for tutoring her all these years. Are you free?”
I looked at him, and a question burned in my throat. *Was there ever a single moment when you truly saw me?*
But I didn’t ask.
“I’m not free.”
“Okay. I’ll tell her you’ve been busy.”
