The groom reached out to shake my hand.
“Emily’s mentioned you. Hi, I’m Ben.”
I smiled back.
“Hi. Congratulations to you both.”
The groom pointed at Thatcher.
“This is my best friend.”
Then he looked toward Ava, a knowing smile on his face.
“And this is Ava, the girl he was in love with in college.”
“The four of them grew up together. Always been thick as thieves.”
“Leo is Ava’s brother. If these two ever actually got married, they’d be one big family.”
“And there’s Aidan, too.”
The others at the table were all Thatcher’s high school friends.
Someone started heckling.
“So, Thatcher, when are you and Ava finally tying the knot?”
“Yeah. Now that Ben’s hitched, you should be next.”
Ben joined in the teasing.
“They look good together, don’t they?”
I smiled and nodded.
“They do.”
Without warning, Thatcher’s hand shot out and grabbed mine. I went completely still.
He lowered his head, his grip tightening.
