I Lost Our Child Chapter 15
After moving out, I lived very close to the office and walked to and from work.
Every evening, Thatcher would be waiting downstairs.
He came every day to walk me home.
Even though I didn’t need him to.
I never spoke to him.
This went on for a month.
And every day he brought something with him.
One day, I forgot my umbrella, and it started to rain.
He came over, holding one out to me.
I said, “I don’t want to share an umbrella with you. I don’t want my coworkers to see.”
He handed it to me.
“Okay. Then you take it.”
“Fine.”
I took it and walked away.
He turned, went into a convenience store, bought another umbrella, and fell into step a few feet behind me.
Another time—
He stood in line for ages to buy me one of those trendy new ice creams.
I finally snapped.
“Thatcher, can you please stop coming to see me? We can talk about the divorce, but nothing else.”
“I’m tired.”
He stiffened, disappointment stark in his eyes.
Two seconds later, he said softly, “Okay.”
Three days later, he came again.
“It’s my birthday today.”
“Can we talk about the divorce?”
I agreed.
He took me to a restaurant.
We talked for a long time, but he never brought up the divorce.
I was starting to get impatient.
