I Lost Our Child Chapter 14

After dinner, my friends helped me tidy up the place.

I saw them out one by one.

Only after I finally sat down did I notice all the missed calls from Thatcher on my phone.

When I went downstairs to take out the trash, I saw him.

He was standing under a streetlamp, breathing a little hard, his chest still rising and falling.

It would have been easy for him to find my new address.

So I hadn’t bothered to hide it.

His voice trembled as he called my name.

“Alessa.”

I nodded once.

“It’s late. You should go home.”

“I’m going upstairs.”

He spoke quickly, catching my hand.

“Today I went to pick Ava up from the hospital. I made things clear to her.”

“It won’t happen again.”

But what did that matter now?

There was no future for us.

“There is no future for us.”

He froze, as though he couldn’t process the words.

After a moment, he asked, “Are you pregnant?”

“Don’t you want to give the child a complete home?”

So he knew.

But that news had come too late.

The child was already gone.

I looked at him.

“Thatcher, the baby’s gone.”

“A month ago, I fell. I had a miscarriage.”

His pupils contracted sharply.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I said, “I did call you.”

“You didn’t answer.”

“Oh, right. You were in Los Angeles, watching Ava’s premiere.”

He stared at me, his eyes slowly turning red.
