Make Them Regret It Chapter 05

I gripped that capsule for a long time.

My mind went back to a month before.

That was when Isabella had just been found and brought home.

She was my parents’ biological daughter. We had been switched at birth, more than twenty years ago.

She had spent two decades fending for herself, and the hardship had taken its toll. By the time she came back to us, long-term malnutrition had caused her Core to atrophy. It was almost useless.

My parents were sick with guilt. My brothers wanted to give her the world.

On her way to the estate, she had been attacked by muggers. Colton saved her, handing her a handkerchief to wipe her tears. She said she had fallen for him that day.

I wanted to make it up to her, too.

I gave her the suite I had lived in for over twenty years. I laid out the jewelry my mother had given me, the trust shares from my father, and the art my brothers had collected from all over the world, and I told her to choose whatever she wanted.

She refused it all.

With red-rimmed eyes, she asked me, “You stole my parents for twenty years. Are you going to keep my Core, too?”

I had been born with a complete Core, and my abilities had fully matured by the time I was twenty.

The family doctor said there was only one way for Isabella to recover: a transplant.

That day, my father sat in my room for a very long time.

“Blythe, your abilities have stabilized. If you lose your Core, you’ll just be weaker for a while. You’ll recover. But Isabella is different. Without one, she’ll be crippled for life. She might not even live very long.”
