I Died In His Arms Now I’ll Marry Another Chapter 17
I spent several days at home healing.
No matter how hard I thought, I couldn’t find any memory connected to Callum.
I decided I would go and ask him in person.
But the moment I stepped into the foyer, my father stormed over, his face livid, and raised his hand to strike me.
“You actually dared to harm Queen Evelyn!”
I caught his wrist.
“And who told you that?”
Celeste dabbed at her eyes with a tissue.
“The Royal Guard is already outside. How could it be false? Are you trying to get us all killed?”
That was when I learned that ever since the soccer match, Queen Evelyn had been unwell.
A few days earlier, a rash had appeared on her body. Soon after, she coughed up blood and fell unconscious.
The Royal Healer had detected a rare poison on her clothing. Since my jacket was one of the things she had touched that day, I was now the primary suspect.
The man in charge of taking me away was none other than Adrian, deputy commander of the Royal Guard’s Investigations Division.
Storm clouds hung low over the city.
I stood at the door, looking at Adrian in his black Royal Guard uniform at the foot of the steps.
The wind tugged at the hem of his coat.
His lips were pressed into a tight line.
“Laurel, please cooperate with the investigation.”
“I can provide my phone, my vehicle records, and my movements for that day. But I will not enter the Royal Guard’s sealed investigation unit.”
“In a poisoning case involving a member of the royal family, the suspect must submit to isolated questioning.”
Adrian paused, then softened his voice.
“I’ll make sure no one hurts you.”
One of the Guards behind him shot him a startled glance.
I let out a cold laugh.
“And what if I refuse?”
Whether in my last life or this one, Adrian never understood what I was truly afraid of.
Of course he could guarantee I wouldn’t be tortured.
But the moment the Royal Guard publicly escorted me into a sealed investigation unit, the media and every Pack’s rumor mill would condemn me before a single fact was proven. Even if I walked out unharmed, my engagement and what little reputation I had left would be torn to shreds.
Adrian’s brow tightened.
“Why won’t you go? I know you may be innocent, but if we don’t follow procedure and clear this up, who will believe you?”
“If this gets bigger, I won’t be able to protect you, either.”
A cool, smiling voice came from the end of the drive.
