I Died In His Arms Now I’ll Marry Another Chapter 18
“My fiancée will be protected by me. You needn’t trouble yourself.”
Callum had arrived without my noticing.
His leg made walking difficult, and he wasn’t moving fast, but there was nothing awkward in his gait.
As I watched him come toward me, step by step, a wave of indignation suddenly surged in my chest.
“Callum.”
By the time the word left my mouth, it had already turned into a sob.
“I’m here.”
He brushed the tears from the corners of my eyes with his thumb.
When he turned to face the Royal Guard, all the gentleness in his expression vanished.
“She is willing to submit evidence, and she is willing to be questioned in the presence of her lawyer and a Royal Council observer. Until there is direct evidence, no one gets to drag her away like a criminal.”
Adrian’s jaw clenched.
“Callum, you currently have no on-site authority. If you interfere with a royal security investigation, I can arrest you.”
“My authority was suspended. It was never revoked.”
From inside his coat, Callum produced a black credential embossed with the royal crest.
“Chief Commander of the Royal Guard Investigations Division, Callum Rhodes. Gentlemen, I suggest you verify your orders.”
Every Guard went still.
They had almost forgotten. The post of Chief Commander of the Investigations Division had been vacant for years not because King Roland couldn’t find a replacement, but because he had been waiting for Callum to recover.
When he was young, Callum had shone even brighter than Adrian.
At eighteen, he defied his parents and joined the border forces.
At nineteen, he infiltrated a rogue encampment alone and opened an escape route for trapped Guards. After that, he led a small detachment across the northern wasteland to destroy the enemy command center.
King Roland personally decorated him and appointed him Chief Commander of the Royal Guard Investigations Division, authorizing him to handle cases that threatened the Crown.
Then an accident ruined his health and his right leg.
He requested to resign, but King Roland refused, granting him only indefinite leave.
And so, the most dazzling hero of the border faded from public view.
