His Love Is Not Visible Chapter 28
We were sitting in a fondue restaurant. I turned the piece of beef she had just dropped into the pot.
“Ninety seconds is enough. Don’t overcook it.”
Megan glared at me.
“I’m over here cursing people out for you.”
“You still have to eat after you curse them out.”
She shoved the beef into her mouth in a huff.
I couldn’t help laughing.
Now that Garrett had clarified things, our friends finally knew the photos had nothing to do with me.
But my innocence wasn’t a gift he gave me.
It was always mine.
Halfway through the meal, I received a bank transfer notification from Garrett.
The note said only:
[You never needed to pay that back.]
I didn’t accept it.
The year my grandfather had his surgery, the Bancrofts had helped us.
During the divorce, I insisted on paying the money back. Garrett refused and gave me an extra apartment in the settlement on top of it.
We both used money to manage emotion, as if as long as the accounts weren’t settled, some door between us would remain open.
I didn’t want that door left open.
I contacted my realtor and put the apartment from the divorce on the market.
After it sold, I had my lawyer transfer Garrett the portion of the original purchase price he had paid, along with the amount of the old medical bill, as stipulated in our divorce agreement. I forwarded him the receipt.
[Garrett, we’re settled.]
A long time passed before he replied.
[Okay.]
Half an hour later, he sent another message.
[Laurie, I’m sorry.]
I didn’t reply.
I deleted the conversation and raised my Coke to clink against Megan’s glass.
She asked, “What are we celebrating?”
“Finally not owing anyone anything.”
