They Voted Me Out Of The Wedding So I Canceled It Chapter 05

“Convenient for what?” I asked, holding up the iPad after we got home.

Evan saw the note, and his fingers immediately began twisting his wedding ring. “It was just a rough draft. It didn’t mean anything.”

“You twist your ring when you lie.”

His hand stilled. Finally, he admitted it: if I wanted to postpone the trip, it would be a convenient excuse to cancel it altogether. It would save money and keep me from asking more questions.

“I was just trying to keep the peace between two families, Claire. I love you. Our marriage is what matters.”

At the rehearsal dinner, the relatives started in on me again, telling me not to make things difficult for Ava.

I cut them off and stood up.

“Evan, answer me in front of everyone. At Ava’s wedding, who should be standing beside you—me, your legal wife, or your ex-wife, Rachel?”

The table went silent.

He turned the ring that was supposed to symbolize our vows and refused to meet my eyes.

“Do we have to do this here? Rachel is Ava’s mother. It’s one day.”

That was all the answer I needed.

“So all of this—the vote, shutting me out—you let it happen?”

He lowered his voice. “I was trying to give you a graceful exit so you and Rachel wouldn’t clash. Don’t make this uglier than it has to be.”

I opened my phone and sent the email I had already drafted.

The subject line was *Wedding Transition Checklist*.

Every vendor account and password was listed inside. My credit card had already been removed. At the very bottom was my divorce lawyer’s contact information.

“Have a perfect wedding.”

I got up and walked out of the restaurant. Behind me, Evan was still trying to calm everyone down.

“Just let her cool off. She’s not going to leave this family.”

When the restaurant door swung shut behind me, I didn’t go home.

What he didn’t know was that the moving truck I’d booked was already parked around the corner, waiting to take me and my things to the apartment I had rented in Atlanta.
