Ray held out the envelope.
“There are photos, an address, a safe-deposit key, and documents my lawyer prepared. There’s also a letter for the head of the Moretti family, asking for neutral protection for the girl.”
He glanced at Dante.
“I saved your life, but I’m not trading on that debt. You can refuse. The donor procedures will continue either way.”
I took the envelope without opening it.
“When can the surgery be scheduled?”
“That depends on the final medical evaluation. Tentatively, next Wednesday.”
“I agree.”
Ray stared at me for three seconds.
“You’re not going to ask her name? Or who my enemies are?”
“Anything you’re willing to tell me is already in the envelope. Anything you aren’t, I won’t get by asking.” I slipped the envelope into the inner pocket of my coat. “You saved my life. Even without the donors, I would help her.”
He was quiet for a long time, then put the unlit cigarette back in his pocket.
