He Chose Another Heir Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 38
“This isn’t a transaction.”
Ray’s expression sobered. He pressed the envelope to his knee and took out a cigarette, holding it between his teeth without lighting it.
“First, something else. I have a daughter.”
I froze.
“The year I left the De Lucas, she was three. I couldn’t keep her with me, so I sent her to a foster family out of state, under another name. I haven’t dared contact her all these years. My enemies—and some of the people I once served—could track her down from the smallest clue.”
He looked at me.
“There’s something in my lungs. The doctor says a year, at most.”
There was no pleading in his eyes. Only trust.
“She’s fifteen now. After I’m gone, I want you to become her legal guardian. She doesn’t need money; the account I set up will get her through college. What she needs is an adult who can sign for her if she’s in danger, someone who dares to tell those people no.”
