He Protected My Baby’s Killer So I Left Him Chapter 15

The line was quiet for a long time.

“That settlement agreement…”

“I won’t revoke it,” I said.

“Not because I’ve forgiven her.”

“But because I gave my word, and I intend to keep it.”

“As for the court’s judgment, that is a consequence she has to bear herself.”

Isabella’s father thanked me through tears.

After I hung up, I got a message from Matteo.

I saw Isabella today.

She asked me why I wouldn’t protect her anymore.

That’s when I finally understood. She only dared to hit you because we made her believe that no matter what she did, there would be no consequences.

The message went on.

He said he was wrong.

He said every night he dreamed of me lying in that hospital bed as he walked out the door.

He said he’d restored the apartment to exactly how it was.

The nursery, too.

I read that far and then turned off the screen.

The baby was gone.

He could put that room back together a hundred times, and it would never bring my child back.

My trust in them was the same.

It couldn’t be regrown from an apology.

That night, my parents came home with a cake.

It was the day the first project I led had officially been signed.

My father lit the candles, and my mother told me to make a wish.

I looked at the flickering flames and suddenly realized it had been a very long time since I’d thought about that apartment in New York.

So I closed my eyes.

And I didn’t make a single wish that had anything to do with them.
