He Protected My Baby’s Killer So I Left Him Chapter 14
On my first day back at work, a colleague helped me with my onboarding paperwork.
When we got to the emergency contact line, I wrote down my mother’s name.
Under “Relationship,” I paused for a second.
Then I wrote:
Family.
Every now and then, I would get messages from unfamiliar numbers.
Matteo asked how I was feeling.
Leo said he’d had all of Toast’s old toys professionally cleaned.
Marco said he’d had an identical cloud lamp custom-made.
Nico sent only one sentence.
I said I would pick you up that day, and I broke my promise.
I never replied.
Everything they mailed, I sent back, unopened.
Four months after I left, Isabella’s case went to trial.
The police contacted me to ask if I was willing to testify in court.
I refused.
The evidence was all there. I had no desire to stand in front of her and relive losing my child.
On the day of the trial, Isabella’s father called me.
He said Isabella had pleaded guilty.
And he said he was sorry.
I leaned against the window, watching Toast chase a patch of sunlight across the floor.
“Sir, this was never your fault.”
