Body Checked By My Straight Captain Chapter 30
The bus doors fold open. Cold air rushes inside.
Guys grab their bags and file out.
Connor stands.
For one horrible second, I think this is where it ends.
Then he takes my bag from the rack and slings it over his shoulder with his own.
I stare at him.
“Connor—”
“What?”
We step off together. One of the guys snorts.
“What, Prince too delicate to carry his own bag now?”
A couple guys laugh. Connor stops.
“You got something to say about Mercer?”
The guy’s smile falters.
“I was joking, Cap.”
“Then get funnier.” Connor steps toward him. “He’s faster than you. Works harder than you. And after watching him carry your ass on the ice tonight, I figured I could carry his fucking bag.”
Nobody laughs now. My face burns.
Connor shifts my bag higher and keeps walking.
Beside me.
Like that settles it.
I glance across the lot. Jace has stopped dead.
Even he looks impressed.
Then his eyes meet mine.
That wicked smile returns.
My phone buzzes.
JACE: Cute.
Buzz.
JACE: Missing something, Prince?
I look up.
Connor’s hoodie hangs over Jace’s shoulder.
GRIFFITH across the back.
Buzz.
JACE: Want your Captain’s souvenir back? Meet me after practice.
Then—
JACE: Alone.
I stare at the screen.
I have to go.
That hoodie could expose Connor too.
That’s the reason.
At least, that’s what I tell myself…
Because when I meet Jace’s eyes—
something hot twists low in my stomach.
Connor is beside me. Safe. Choosing me.
Jace is across the lot. Dangerous. Waiting.
I look between them.
Oh, I am so fucked.
