My Composure After Divorce Became His Greatest Torment Chapter 10

“I accept the apology.”

I pulled my hand back, my tone even. “But from now on, whether it’s about Caroline’s demands or your settlement offers, please go through my lawyer.”

Nathan’s brows drew together. He was about to speak when Caroline’s voice cut through the air.

“Nathan, my parents are still upstairs waiting for you.”

She hurried over. Only then did I realize he was here to accompany her on a visit to her parents.

Suddenly, I remembered the second year of our marriage, when my father had a heart attack. Nathan had claimed he had an important meeting in Europe and sent his assistant to drive me to the airport. My father was in the hospital for a week, and Nathan never once called to ask how he was.

Even during this pregnancy, I had gone to every appointment alone.

It wasn’t that he didn’t know how to be there for someone. He just had never wanted to be there for me.

Love, or the lack of it, always leaves a trail.

The moment Caroline saw me, the smile on her face vanished.

“Why are you here? Were you following Nathan?”

I didn’t bother to explain. I just turned and walked toward the car waiting at the curb.

She started to follow, but Nathan put a hand out to stop her.

After the car door closed, I glanced back through the window. Caroline stood watching me, her face a mask of hatred, as if I were the one who had stolen something from her.

She had already taken my husband and my home. She had tried to claim my child.

What was left for her to hate me for?

My phone buzzed.

It was a link from Tessa: a Vanity Fair profile from five years ago, detailing Caroline’s recovery from cancer.
