My Composure After Divorce Became His Greatest Torment Chapter 11
I opened the link.
In the interview, Caroline admitted that as part of her treatment for ovarian cancer, she had undergone a total hysterectomy. She would never be able to have children.
In that instant, everything clicked into place.
Nathan’s insistence that I carry the baby to term, Caroline’s eagerness to take over my prenatal care and delivery—it was never about the child.
They wanted to use my body to produce a Prescott heir, then erase me from the picture.
A wave of revulsion and dread washed over me. I tightened my grip on my phone, suddenly grateful that the consultation was already scheduled.
That evening, my lawyer called.
“Opposing counsel just sent over an attachment by mistake.”
It was a draft of a postnatal custody relinquishment agreement. The language was crystal clear: I would voluntarily surrender all rights to the child, and Caroline would then petition for a stepparent adoption.
Hard proof.
On the day of the final property negotiations, I ran into Caroline outside the law firm.
Her makeup was flawless. She wore a white suit, looking at me with the smug confidence of a victor. Soundlessly, she mouthed three words.
*You lost.*
Without a glance in her direction, I walked straight into the conference room.
Nathan was already there.
He pushed a new agreement toward my lawyer. “To settle this as quickly as possible,” he said, his voice low, “I’ve added another investment asset as compensation.”
My lawyer opened the file and looked at me.
“It’s a substantial increase, Elise. Do you find this acceptable?”
